I drew a Raster Lion today. He had a bird on his back which had painted the CND sign on his back. He was pleasant but I felt he had no depth. From looking at him the viewer could not say, 'who is this lion?', 'what does he want?' Then it occurred to me that people don't want good for nothin hippy lions, they want a character with a story.... A grifter, con-man, card player, in the big business!!! Any suggestions for an animal...perhaps a fox??? I think this could work as I have a new addiction for the programme Hustle. It never fails to impress me, the tricks they do and how the whole con works out in the end...FANTASTIC!
Yesterday I was waiting at the main bus stop of a certain town and felt extremely depressed. I looked around and felt extremely gloomy as I saw young mother 'fagging it' while her young boy stood next to her, breathing in the intoxicating smoke. A gypsy family, shouting at each other, wearing heavy gold and the middle aged woman in skin tight leggings with a fur coat. The man bends down to the curb and pockets a used cigarette from the gutter. The place smelt of old wee and smoke. It was horrible and I longed to escape it! Much to my pleasure the bus came and the Gypsy family and the young mum climbed on with me. The bus was packed as we pulled away from the stop and the smell of sweat was strong in the air... I nearly emptied my stomach on the floor.
Once I got home I washed my face and tried to rid myself of the bus stop scent. Unclean, unclean, unclean and ultimately depressed just by being in such an area. I had to draw something to cheer my mood and that something was a lion with dreadlocks. He may be a good for nothing hippy and not a strong character like the con fox but he will always be the drawing that pulled me out of the blue.
