I am not sure what it is about this glorious time of year or maybe my age that makes me see the importance of family. Just as Bonfire night finishes, leaving a trace of smoke in the chilled air and the start of the long festive period, that is welcomed into our bosom with much merriment, begins; we find that we start to see the relatives alot more. I know in my close-knit family, it is no less than traditional to be constantly popping in on each other, minus all schedules! Maybe it is because the cliche with christmas and winter is to be surrounded by your family, usually in front of a crackling, open fire, that makes me think I am seeing them more at this time. Maybe this time of year makes me appreciate them more, after all, christmas is the end of the year upon which we tend to reflect on the events of the last 365 days.
It becomes, that any excuse to celebrate we shall seize. For example my 2nd cousins birthday this weekend, shall result in over 60 members of the family gathering together. Nearer to Christmas there is the local towns Victorian Market- all fairy lights, roasted chestnuts, hot pot, warm mince pies and snow! Not only do the calendar written celebrations get a fuss with our family, but also those unannounced visits will get fresh coffee, mince pies and in the evening sherry and nibbles.
But even when we don't go anywhere and nobody comes to visit, there are those wonderful evenings of a roaring fire, christmas telly, the christmas Radio Times at hand with circles and the word, 'Tape' drawn all over each festive page and the excuse to eat fatty foods and sweet treats- for no other reason, than christmas.
So I wish all my fellow readers, not a merry christmas (too soon for that) but a Fabulous festive season, November to December!
